Job Description

The Synthetic Organic Chemist role focuses on carbohydrate synthesis and analysis. This exciting role also plays a part in supporting Research & Development on a diverse line of innovative food products that have a positive impact on health and well being around the globe.   • Design, plan and execute multi-step organic synthesis of new compounds that are suitable for industrial large-scale synthesis, with minimal direction.

  • Review peer-reviewed research literature, patent literature, and propose strategies for the synthesis of novel carbohydrates.

  • Develop practical and scalable methods for the isolation and purification of target compounds.

  • Perform characterization of novel compounds (including stereoisomers) using various chromatography methods including HPLC, GCMS and LCMS, NMR spectroscopy, optical rotation, CD, and physical properties such as DSC and TGA.

  • When applicable, oversee the research efforts of external collaborators; and provide coaching and guidance to junior scientists and interns by leading from the bench.

  • Carry out organic synthesis work for the majority of their time, to deliver project results regularly to achieve R&D program goals.

  • Maintain a complete and accessible laboratory notebook, participating in discussions relevant to the project.

  • Actively participate in the design and development of ZeroIN intellectual property.

  • Organize and present research results.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Masters in synthetic organic chemistry required; PhD in organic chemistry would be preferred.

  • At least 2 years of hands-on industrial experience in organic synthesis is required, with experience in the chemistry of carbohydrate compounds or oligo-/polysaccharide.

  • Self-motivated and self-directed with a practical, industry-oriented mindset.

  • Proven competency and technical laboratory skills in the synthesis of complex organic compounds and carbohydrates.

  • Thorough understanding and hands-on experience of modern analytical and purification techniques and instrumentation.

  • Inquisitive, creative, and able to problem-solve efficiently and independently.

  • Adaptable person who can thrive in a multi-disciplinary research environment, and understand the importance of delivering results within project deadlines.

  • Demonstrate significant skills in production while adhering to safe laboratory practices and environmental safeguards.

  • English proficiency required (written and spoken); demonstrated mastery at slide presentations and spreadsheets to organize and convey the results of your work. Proficiency in additional languages would be considered an asset.

  • Exemplifies a high degree of professionalism and respectful behaviour, is versatile and adaptable to changes in the startup work environment as the business is undergoing rapid growth.

  • Leads their area of responsibility with accountability to develop and execute their tasks productively and successfully.
